We recently announced our partnership with TECHIN – a Technology Innovation Foundation of IIT Palakkad which focuses on assisting innovation and incubation for growing entrepreneurs, to build a Medtech Research Center of Excellence.
By supporting local entrepreneurs, we hope to enable access to healthcare and medical technology by developing an ecosystem of academia, hospitals and the industry to further grow the innovations and solutions to help patients worldwide. To further achieve this objective, West’s medical expertise in collaboration with IIT’s unique incubation model are working to advance research and development in medical technology.
Our Digital Technology Center (DTC) in Bengaluru will work directly with TECHIN’s team throughout this partnership. To support the start-ups in the program, we will be providing a noncommercial prototype of its ‘medical device connectivity platform’ to support the development of connected med-tech equipment.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of multi-dose vials. First, multi-dose vials can create efficiency and reduce packaging waste when vaccines are administered to large populations. For example, both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines provide multiple doses per vial to maximize the number of people vaccinated as quickly as possible. Secondly, multi-dose vials enable dosing flexibility to a diverse group of patients with different dosages dependent on patient age/weight. This also applies to the animal health sector to accommodate the large diversity across different species, dosage differences, and use of various needle gauge sizes.
Many parenteral drug products, such as monoclonal antibodies, are susceptible to degradation over time. To enable a longer shelf life, such drugs are often stored in a lyophilized state. Lyophilization (<em>freeze-drying</em>) is a process by which water is removed from a drug product. In the absence of water, all metabolic processes stop, making lyophilized drug products far more stable.
<em>Summary of FDA’s recent Inspection for visible particles draft guidance “Inspection of Injectable Products for Visible Particulates” and how it applies to components</em><br />The visual inspection of injectable drug product has been a regulatory requirement since 1936<sup>1</sup>, however, successful implementation of the standard has been challenging for many organizations. The number of recall notices issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2010 through 2019 for injectable products due to visible particulate have reduced since 2014 but at the current trend, will be some time before it approaches zero<sup>2</sup>. Between 2009 and 2019, the presence of visible particles in parenteral product was the second leading cause for product recalls.<sup>3</sup> Patient safety is the main driver for requiring injectable products to meet the criteria of “essentially free of visible particulates.”<sup>4</sup>

Synthetic rubber has replaced natural rubber in many fields over the past decades. Very notable are the synthetic halobutyl rubbers used as a base for pharmaceutical elastomer components. They are an excellent choice due to their attributes of low permeability to air and moisture, excellent aging resistance, and low level of extractables. Halobutyl rubbers are available in two types, chlorobutyl and bromobutyl; both can be manufactured by co-polymerization with halogenated monomer.
