Container Closure Integrity

Have the data you need to mitigate product quality risk

As new biologics are developed and storage conditions and packaging become more complex, it is increasingly crucial to understand the integrity of the packaging and the appropriate methods for evaluating and testing it.

Capabilities and Expertise

West offers a comprehensive range of Container Closure Integrity (CCI) technologies for diverse packaging and delivery systems, supporting pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device manufacturers. By partnering with West's CCI experts, companies benefit from exceptional customer support and technical expertise, enabling flexibility and innovation in packaging solutions. This collaboration can enhance drug product value and ensure patient safety.

West's CCI technologies are tailored to package type, product fill, and storage conditions. Our analysts evaluate parenteral packaging systems using probabilistic and deterministic methods, aligning with USP <1207> guidelines. They assist customers from package development to life cycle management, navigating regulatory landscapes.

With over 20 years of experience, West's analytical services team provides method development and validation tailored to your product. They offer customized CCI studies for specific product lifecycle phases

Analytical technologies used for container closure integrity testing include:

West Platform Test Methods

West offers platform Helium Leak Detection and Laser-based Gas Headspace Analysis test methods to evaluate inherent package integrity and to identify transient leaks that can occur during ultra-cold shipping and storage. Testing can be performed at a number of storage temperatures ranging from -180°C to 40°C, fitting the needs for a wide variety of products and packages. We are able to perform CCI analysis at the below temperature conditions in real time, providing an accurate CCI assessment:

  • Ambient
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C)
  • Frozen:
    • -20°C
    • -80°C
    • -120°C
    • -180°C (Vapor Phase Liquid Nitrogen)
As packaging systems become more complex and research continues to develop new biologics, the ability to store container systems in a comparable way to their lifecycle storage is of the utmost importance.
