Planet Forward: – Reducing and Reusing Material for a More Sustainable World

Today, we celebrate Global Recycling Day, and the vital role recycling material plays in securing the future of our planet. Our One West Team is dedicated to finding innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote a circular economy. Eliminating waste is a key sustainability priority for West, and our initiatives demonstrate our commitment to tackling climate challenges while meeting the expectations of our key stakeholders.

Sustainability at West

For us, it’s not just about removing waste from landfill, it’s about finding a beneficial repurpose for materials. Sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's ingrained in everything we do. Our Planet Forward initiative is driving real change, from reducing waste in our facilities to partnering with local communities on environmental projects. We believe that every small step toward sustainability amounts to a significant impact for our planet and business.

One of our critical areas of focus is the reduction of scrap and other rubber waste as part of our manufacturing processes. Through our Operational Excellence Strategy, we strive for continuous improvement.

For the rubber waste we do have, we take proactive steps to collaborate with global partners to find useful needs. For example, we are finding creative uses for our surplus rubber materials, such as repurposing it into durable pavers or downcycling and re-molding into consumer grade rubber products.

Another defining characteristic of our company is our culture of giving, nurturing a culture of philanthropy and community involvement. Our One West Team around the globe continues to embody this spirit, donating time and resources to create a healthier world. Combining our efforts for a healthier planet and supporting the communities that we live and work in, this blog highlights a few of our initiatives around the globe .

Sustainability in Footsteps - Partnering with the Philadelphia Flyers for a Sustainable 5k

For the past two years we have partnered with the Philadelphia Flyers Charities Gritty 5K, a race that brings over 4,000 families together in the Philadelphia area to raise money for local charities. In 2022, in partnership with Sustainable Solutions Corporation, Flyers Charities announced that their Gritty 5K was GreenCircle Certified as a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ event. Through the race, Flyers Charities identified ways to divert over 550 pounds of waste with 80 percent being recycled, composted, or donated, and the remainder going to waste-to-energy. This year we will again join the Philadelphia Flyers to implement additional ways to keep the run a Zero Waste-to-Landfill event.

Sustainability alongside STEM- The Laptop Recycling Program

In Bangalore India, where our Global Technology Center is located, our team is making a meaningful impact by promoting sustainability alongside STEM education. In collaboration with Need Base India, we identified 3 schools in need of computers and set up West computer labs using our refreshed laptops. These labs will benefit more than 600 students from grades 8 to 10, equipping them with essential digital skills that will open doors to higher education and career opportunities in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Our team also conducted several STEM related activities with the students. Through such initiatives, we are empowering young minds and demonstrating that technology and sustainability can go hand in hand to create a positive social and environmental impact.

Sustainability at Our Fingertips – From Seed to Feed Those in Need

Turning the lens to China - our team is promoting sustainability through our partnership with Green Food Bank.. We sponsor a farm dedicated to growing sustainable food from seed to feed those in need. Our commitment extends beyond sponsorship - our team members in China actively volunteer in farming events, working hand-in-hand to cultivate the land and plant three different types of seeds. These crops will mature after one, three and six months and be given to underprivileged families in the communities.

Turning Recycled Bottles and Cans into Funds to Support Waterford Food Bank

At our Waterford Ireland site last year, we partnered with the local waste management to recycle all bottles and cans onsite raising money for the Waterford Food Bank. We collected all used bottles and cans onsite that qualify for the “Deposit Return Scheme,” giving all the proceeds to charity, allowing them to buy food for people who need it in our local area. This was done by placing a collection bin in the canteen at West. We partnered with Apleona Waste Management staff who facilitated the emptying of the bins to a secure location, and we then worked with the Waterford Foodbank, in conjunction with the Waterford Chamber of Commerce to collect these bags and bring them to a “Re-turn” location. The bottles and cans were then used to redeem vouchers which are then used to buy food. This has been a great initiative which has involved many stakeholders working together to help our local community and has continued into 2025.

Sustainability on the Ground- Dublin Ireland’s “The Green Team”

Several years ago, our Dublin site’s senior leadership team sponsored the formation of ‘The Green Team’, this organizational group’s mission was to champion our employees and be the drivers of sustainable change in West’s Dublin location. Since its inception, events have been organized such as ‘Sustainable September’ timed to tie into EU wide sustainability awareness drives and to engage team member awareness and collect feedback to expand the scope of the sustainable initiatives on site. This team implemented the removal of disposable cups and utensils in at the Dublin site in 2022, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. In 2024, the Dublin site avoided purchasing and disposing of 450,000 of disposable cups.

Another shift for the Dublin site was a focused transition from a Linear to a Circular Economy strategy to reduce packaging waste across the site . A carefully selected multi -use Plastic Tote and Pallet were selected as the most sustainable alternative to the single use corrugate and wood materials. The expansion of the Circular Economy strategy at the Dublin site continues to drive significant reduction of waste year on year.

Corrugate : Reduced by 450MT
Timber : 14,000 wooden pallets
Plastic : 150km of Plastic shrink wrap
CO2 Reduction: 74799.43 Kg of CO2 ( reduction in 50 inbound diesel trucks )

Sustainability in our Own Elements - Waste Collection Strategy in Le Nouvion

The Le Nouvion, France team implemented a revised waste collection strategy back in 2023 and enhanced compaction methods to optimize plastic waste transport, resulting in a CO2 savings of over 10 tons per year! They have also improved the sorting of different types of rubber and added two new dumpsters to the sorting waste area since January 2024. Le Nouvion’s commitment extends to cafeteria waste as well, with an emphasis on sorting bio-waste for composting.
