In Part 1 of our West on the Road – Eschweiler series, we learned about the high-value products produced in our Eschweiler, Germany facility and how this dedicated team of manufacturing experts supports customers in their mission to bring critical medicines to patients. In Part 2, we learn from Lukas Buglowski, Team Lead of Engineering, Envision, about how a focus on quality is both a shared mindset and built into every step of the manufacturing process in Eschweiler. Buglowski shares the pride his team feels knowing that they are producing high-quality products that will not only meet customers’ expectations, but more importantly, ensure patient safety, and how this builds trust and makes for a great team dynamic.
We also learn from Manager of Process Engineering Martin Rothstein about another pride-boosting element about working at Eschweiler: the fact that teams are plugged into and collaborating with West’s global network, regularly providing support to other manufacturing plants around the world. Check out this latest video to see the Eschweiler team in action.
Lyophilization (also called freeze drying) is the process of dehydrating a material at low temperature and reduced pressure. It is used to extend the shelf life of many biologic drug products. Absent water, drug metabolic degradation processes are greatly reduced. Clearly, it is crucial to know the water content of elastomer stoppers for vial-based primary packaging systems for lyophilized drug products.
<p><em>Harold Murray, Project Engineer, and Robert Froio, Intern, West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc.</em></p><p>Flange strength and dimensional variability are critical attributes when designing or selecting an auto-injector device to use in conjunction with a 1mL long syringe. Studies were performed to compare these attributes using Daikyo Crystal Zenith® (CZ) 1mL long syringes and glass 1mL long syringes.</p>
The traditional way to package injectable drugs is to place them in a stoppered vial. The stopper is typically held in place with an aluminum ferrule that is called a seal. The vial seal is crimped onto the vial and not only serves to keep the stopper secured to the vial and the <a href="/blog/2018/february/minimize-microbial-contamination-with-flip-off-seals">vial contents sterilei</a> but also protects the injection site on the stopper and provides a means of demonstrating lack of tampering.
