Exposure to light is a concern with numerous medications due to the potential for photodegradation or other chemical reactions during manufacturing, storage, and administration(1). This may result in potency loss, altered efficacy and adverse biological effects. The sensitivity of a drug to a distinct spectral region of light may vary with its chemical structure, photoreactivity, and nature of the dosage form. The photochemical behavior of a drug provides guidance for handling, packaging, and labeling of drug products. The use of the appropriate containers and packaging material can protect the products from the deleterious effects of light.

Container closure integrity (CCI) has been a fundamental core requirement of containment and delivery solutions in the West product portfolio. Container closure systems (CCSs) must maintain both the sterility and stability of pharmaceutical products; very importantly they must be free of microbial contamination. Microbial ingress into a CCS will jeopardize product sterility.

On Friday, May 29, team members from West’s Exton headquarters hosted the 10th annual West without Borders picnic. In keeping with this year’s theme of honoring veterans, Exton team members selected the Travis Manion and No Barriers foundations, which support US veterans and their families, as the beneficiaries of the fundraising efforts.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of multi-dose vials. First, multi-dose vials can create efficiency and reduce packaging waste when vaccines are administered to large populations. For example, both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines provide multiple doses per vial to maximize the number of people vaccinated as quickly as possible. Secondly, multi-dose vials enable dosing flexibility to a diverse group of patients with different dosages dependent on patient age/weight. This also applies to the animal health sector to accommodate the large diversity across different species, dosage differences, and use of various needle gauge sizes.
