As of 2018, over 4,000 new injectable drug products are in development world wide – a great many of these in small settings such as universities, medical research institutes, and small companies. This custom formulated cyclic olefenic polymer, available today in the Daikyo Crystal Zenith (CZ) portfolio of products offered by West, represents his lifelong ambition to improve all aspects of parenteral packaging and commitment to delivering the most precise formulation to the marketplace.</p>
The manufacture of polymer containers for parenteral drug products differs from that of glass and elastomers and must combine the common manufacturing methods below to meet the needs of the pharmaceutical market.
In 2018, we saw a record-setting year for new-molecular entity (NME) approvals (59) at the FDA1 versus 46 in 2017. 58% were for orphan drugs (patient population less than 200,000 in the US) with 17 biologic-based NME’s. Biosimilars are gaining traction in Europe, in particular. Major factors that are driving the market growth are next-generation business, high growth in chronic diseases, less expensive biosimilar drugs and favorable government regulations.
