Every pharmaceutical company wants to maximize speed to market for a new drug product. One way to enable this is with a platform approach for the package and delivery systems – in other words, to use the same vial containment system and/or syringe system for multiple drug products. To use this approach effectively, component and system performance data is needed. Through the Integrated Solutions platform, West is ideally positioned to provide this data.
Our Integrated Solutions program brings together West’s primary packaging, device, analytical, regulatory and contract manufacturing expertise in a single-source solution. West can help you Simplify the Journey™ at any stage of drug development. Learn more by visiting our Integrated Solutions Program page or contact a technical representative today for additional support and guidance.

Amy Miller and Jennifer Riter

Extractables from elastomeric components become an issue even before a pharmaceutical drug makes contact with the elastomeric component. The suitability of the elastomer and the drug product needs to be taken into consideration at the development stage of the packaging and delivery system for the drug product. The potential for an extractable to leach into the drug product and the impact that leachable will have on the drug’s stability, efficacy and toxicity needs to be scientifically evaluated.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are faced with numerous challenges to produce, package, and ship products successfully to the patient or care giver. Common concerns for all pharmaceutical manufactures include meeting targeted timelines, guarding against drug shortages, increasing speed to market, and generating revenue. Maximizing operating speeds and minimizing operating down time are critical factors for all stakeholders.
