Recently, our Dublin, Ireland facility won the 2017 “Green Pharmaceutical Award” – a long-standing benchmark of excellence for those demonstrating best green practices in Ireland. Winners were announced at the Green Awards ceremony on February 21, 2017.

West’s “Green Team” in Dublin has worked on significant environmental projects that extended across a number of departments including: Environmental Health and Safety, Lean Manufacturing, Facilities, Maintenance and Warehousing.
The team’s efforts, and the resulting Green Award, are evidence of West’s commitment to Corporate Responsibility--specifically within the area of Environmental Sustainability.

The Green Awards were judged by a panel of 15 domestic and internationally based experts. West was up against tough competition in the Green Pharmaceutical Award category, including some of the world’s top pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies.
We are very pleased to have received the 2017 Green Pharmaceutical Award. Our Dublin facility is doing a great job to improve energy use and reduce West’s carbon footprint. These changes have not only increased efficiency, but reduced the overall cost of doing business.

Considering the world of commercial transparent polymers, Daikyo Crystal Zenith® cyclic olefin polymer (COP) clearly stands out – having very good resistance to oxygen/water and compatibility with drug product (it comprises only carbon and hydrogen). Other transparent polymers may suffer limitations, in one or more ways. For example, poly(vinylidene chloride) has outstanding resistance to oxygen/water, but lacks compatibility; sterilization can result in release of HCl. For parenteral drug products, polymer-based containment/delivery systems have many advantages compared to glass.
This is a very common statement that we hear in the Technical Customer Support (TCS) group. There are many things to consider when choosing the right component for a drug application. Just like a drug product, different ingredients are used to make the material for an elastomeric component. Each of the ingredients has a specific role to play in the functionality of the component, but also may pose a potential risk to the drug product.
One of the most important aspects for choosing container closure system for parenteral drug products is to ensure an ideal fit between all components to maintain product sterility.
