At Pharmapack 2017, Fran DeGrazio, Vice-President of Scientific Affairs and Technical Services, spoke on the topic of metal impurities in a presentation entitled: <em><span>The Changing Regulatory Environment Concerning Elemental Impurities and Container Closure Systems</span></em></span>
Standing front and foremost in biologic drug formulation is the optimization of safety and efficacy while ensuring quality and stability during manufacturing. Biologic manufacturing subjects the formulation to different stresses and conditions that may compromise quality and stability. Recently, the requirement for the development of subcutaneous formulations for high dose drugs, such as monoclonal antibodies, at high protein concentrations has created additional challenges, including degradation.
In order to ensure the best quality drug product and optimal patient outcomes, it’s important for drug manufacturers to foster a collaborative effort with their packaging suppliers from the beginning – and that means starting with the patient in mind. Understanding patient needs and how that drug will be delivered, whether through one of West’s delivery devices or some other device, will help determine the needs within the West manufacturing process.
